Operator Training
Impact on System Operations
For practical exercises we use an especially designed training system used for hands-on operator training under normal, emergency and restoring operating conditions. Models covering load, network, power plant, external infeed and related equipment performance and phenomena simulate a realistic performance of the complete power system. The flexible set up of our training system allows us to provide training for individuals as well as cross-training simultaneously for teams of operators from different companies all using a replica of their networks.
The supervisor desks are set up according to the specifications of the operational tasks and training needs whereas the supervisor can use all simulation facilities and has full control over all performed actions. Powerful tools for base-case and scenario definition and -setting in real-time on the one hand limit the time for training preparation and on the other hand allow realistic and 'lively' training sessions.
Normal Operation Training
As a consequence of the separation of traditional functions into different business units within a company or even in separate companies in response to the deregulated electricity environments there is a growing need for cross-functional cooperation of operations to ensure a continuous, safe, reliable and economic operation of power networks. Specific training modules will be required to ensure that all power system operators and indeed market participants have a full understanding of :
- The consequence of separation of functions
- An appreciation of work and goals of the other functional groups
- The relationships between groups and the responsibilities to each other
- How to ensure and improve reliability in this de-regulated environment
- The need for confidentiality
- Improved communications : function to function, company to company, utility to utility
Disturbance Handling Training
Today's power supply industry has to operate the supply systems closer to the technical limits than ever before which increases automatically the possibility of disturbances. Additional upcoming non-technical issues like legal liabilities, which become more relevant in opened markets, require a new perspective on disturbance handling. One of the key factors in disturbance handling is the operating personell and their ability to draw the right decisions under time pressure respecting the given circumstances to prevent a total blackout.
Power System Restoration Training
Severe power failures, or black-outs, are very rare in interconnected power systems, but can not fully be avoided. An operator in a control centre may spend many years on job without being confronted with such a problem. In case, operators of network- and production- companies have to co-operate efficiently to achieve a fast and efficient restoration. This will prove exceedingly difficult without previous experience in handling such an extreme situation, which shows an entirely unusual performance of network and power plants. Through simulative training, common to both operator-groups, this lack in experience can be dramatically improved.
Power system restoration after blackouts can not be achieved by activities in one control-centre, but requires co-ordinated operations of the staff in several control centres. Hence a useful training simulator has to achieve the following:
- represent several control centres in parallel (responsible for one network-region or production company each)
- model the extreme conditions of network and plant with sufficient precision
- display their performance with operative realism on the different surfaces.
